Windows are easy to ignore until they're costing you comfort and money. Here's how to tell when replacement is worth it and what the process looks like.

## Signs it's time

- Drafts you can feel, or rooms that never hold temperature.
- Condensation or fog *between* the panes — the seal has failed and can't be repaired.
- Frames that are rotted, warped, or painted shut.
- Single-pane glass in a climate with real winters or summers.

## Repair or replace?

Cracked hardware, worn weatherstripping, and small drafts are often fixable for a fraction of replacement cost. Failed seals, rot, and structural damage are not — that's replacement territory.

## What to expect

Most homes get "insert" replacements that fit into the existing frame, which is faster and cheaper than a full "new-construction" tear-out. A crew can typically do a house of windows in a day or two. Expect to choose glass package (double vs triple pane, low-E coatings) and frame material — vinyl is the value pick; fiberglass and wood cost more but last and look better.

## The payoff

Energy savings are real but rarely pay for the windows alone. The bigger wins are comfort, quiet, and resale appeal. Prioritize the worst offenders first if you can't do the whole house at once.
